The tree has been drawing a mixture of criticism and pity since it was put up in the square earlier this month.

Many people on social media have been mourning its untimely demise.

The tree even has its own Twitter account now, and a solid 5000+ followers.

"Spelacchio" (which roughly translates as "mangy") is now rapidly entering meme territory.

RIP.
